In our imagination, Cleopatra and the pyramids belong to the same "ancient Egypt". In reality, they are separated by a gulf of time that is hard to picture.

The Great Pyramid of Khufu was completed around 2560 BC. Cleopatra VII was born in 69 BC and died in 30 BC. So almost 2,500 years passed between the building of the pyramid and her birth. From her death to the launch of the first iPhone in 2007, 2,037 years passed.

The pyramids were an ancient monument to her

For Cleopatra, the pyramids were as old as Cleopatra's own time is for us. When she ruled, Giza was already a tourist destination. Greeks and Romans visited it as one of the wonders of the world and left inscriptions on the stones, just like tourists today.

Cleopatra was not Egyptian

It is worth adding that Cleopatra came from the Ptolemaic dynasty, founded by a Macedonian general of Alexander the Great. Her family ruled Egypt for almost 300 years, but spoke Greek. According to Plutarch, Cleopatra was the first of her line to learn Egyptian at all.
